Translation of songs lyrics
When I love a song, I like to translate the lyrics by writing to know the meaning of this one. After that, I check on the web to visualize and understand my mistakes and if I don’t know a word i look up on a dictionary. This is a very good trick for me I learn a lot of vocabulary without have the impression to really work.
This is one example of my exercises. I chosen « My bed » of Marbert Rocel released in 2009 because I like the musical rhythm of this song and I wanted to understand the lyrics. Moreover since I live in Dublin I listen a lot this music !

Generally I’m strong enough to understand the song refrain because it is repeated several times. You can notice that I didn’t make any mistakes in this example.
At the first listening it was difficult for me to understand all the lyrics because I have not been able to get all the words. Even with three listenings I couldn’t recognize the lyrics entirely.
It was only when I checked on the net the lyrics to correct myself that I understood all the words. After reading the lyrics it’s really easy to understand the meaning of the song. Since I have seen the lyrics I understand perfectly « My bed ».
I did some stupids mistakes like I forgot the « s » at the third person and any errors of understanding like it was not « cookies » but « cold keys ». I need to improve my ear to understand better for that I have to pursue this kind of exercice and to watch movies in english without subtitles.
In this type of exercice you have to write what you understand. In addition to this, after the third listening you have to re-read what you wrote to see if the sentences are consistent or not.
Here is the vocabulary that I looked up on a dictionary because I didn’t know the meaning :
To stroke = caresser
Blinded = ébloui
None = aucun
To dive = plonger
Spark = étincelle
Thanks to this song I have learned five words. If I translate a lot of songs I will know several new words and expressions !
